The present invention relates to a backlight unit which can stably drive a light source by using a fixed direct current voltage. The backlight unit comprises: a light source configured to emit light by a driving current; and a backlight control unit configured to receive a digital dimming signal, which defines a length of an output period of the driving current from a pulse width modulation unit, and increase a duty ratio of the driving current and decrease a duty ratio of a digital dimming signal compared to a reference duty ratio when the duty ratio of the driving current is lower than the reference duty ratio.
