A depth sounder comprises a pulse generator for generating periodically recurring electric pulses only certain of which, occurring at regular intervals, are used to initiate the transmission of acoustic pulses and means for receiving pulses and indicating depth only under control of pulses received between the transmitted pulse and the next following electric pulse. In an embodiment of the invention used in a depth finder of the type described in Specifications 644,433 and 644,456 the pulse generator comprises a blocking oscillator 11 the repetition rate of which may be adjusted by the tap 23 on potentiometer 18. The power pack 12 as shown includes a battery 13 and vibrator 14. The pulses generated are amplified by valve 28 and then applied simultaneously to the grids of gas discharge tubes 32 and 33. If the screen grid and anode potentials are sufficiently high the generated pulse will fire tube 32 and discharge condenser 38 through magnetostriction transmitter 39 to produce the transmitted pulse. Firing tube 32 reduces the screen grid and anode potentials and discharges condenser 41 which recharges through resistor 43 connected to the anode whose potential is itself increasing owing to the recharging of condenser 38. As long as the potential of the screen grid is below the critical potential the tube 32 will not fire again and thus transmitter 39 can be arranged to operate only on every third or fourth generated pulse. A keying rate indicator 48 is provided having five indicating reeds, the centre of which is timed to the correct frequency. Adjustment of contact 23 enables this frequency to be obtained. The echo pulses reaching receiver 51 are converted into electrical impulses which pass to a three stage amplifier 54, 56, 67. Blocking of valve 54 is provided for each generated pulse by the connection of its grid 57 to the anode of discharge tube 33 so that the directly transmitted wave does not affect the 'receiver indicator. The gradual charge of condenser 63 associated with the connection provides a corresponding increase in gain of valve 54 so that weaker echoes from greater depths receive greater amplification. Potentiometer 66 adjusts the gain level of valve 54 and is adjusted to avoid cross talk due for example to reverberation of the joint housing of units 51 and 39. The timing circuit comprises an Eccles-Jordan trigger circuit comprising valves 69 and 70 with a meter 86 connected in the anode circuit of valve 69. The meter 86 indicates the average current flow in that anode circuit, the valve 69 being made conductive by the transmitted pulse and cut off by the echo signal or, if this is not received first, the next generated pulse from unit 11. Switch 83 has three positions, one to check the battery, one to regulate the current flow through tube 69 when conducting, which may be done by potentiometer 91, and a depth indicating (normal) position.
