PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an organic electrochromic element that achieves high response speed and is excellent in durability even when excessively large current flows.SOLUTION: An electrochromic layer 12 disposed between a pair of electrodes 11 includes an organic electrochromic material, an oxidation-reduction substance, and solvent. Both the organic electrochromic material and the oxidation-reduction substance are materials undergoing reversible oxidation-reduction reaction. A potential at which the oxidation-reduction substance undergoes oxidation (or reduction) is between a potential at which the organic electrochromic material reversibly undergoes oxidation (or reduction) and a potential at which the organic electrochromic material irreversibly undergoes oxidation (or reduction).SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
