SYSTEM AND METHOD FOR IMPROVING THE EFFICIENCY OF A SERIAL INTERFACE PROTOCOL

A link layer of a serial protocol is modified to perform early primitive detection. An early primitive detector unit compares an undecoded bit sequence to that corresponding to a particular primitive. A primitive notification is generated in response to identifying a match. Latency is reduced compared with performing link layer decoding and then identifying primitives.

1. A method of reducing latency in a serial interface, comprising:
receiving an undecoded bit sequence from a physical layer of the serial interface; performing link layer decoding and providing the decoded output to a link layer receive state machine; monitoring, in the link layer, the undecoded bit sequence and comparing the undecoded bit sequence against a specific sequence corresponding to a particular primitive of interest; and in response to determining that the undecoded bit sequence matches the specific bit sequence, generating an early primitive notification and providing the early primitive notification to the link layer receive state machine.
