Class 8(ii) A process for the removal of readily condensible constituents and impurities from air in the separation thereof by cooling and two-stage rectification in columns 1, 2 comprises prewashing the air in a separator 3 with a small portion of oxygen-rich liquid supplied from the high pressure column 1 e.g., through a valve 30 and. a sprinkler 6 or alternatively by overflow from a tube 8 by which washed air passes to the column 1 ; the contaminated washing liquid being removed from the system and the impurityfree air passing from column 1 to column 2 for further separation. The contaminated washing liquid is either exhausted through a valve 16 to atmosphere or partially vaporized in a condenser 18 in heat exchange with nitrogen from the conventional high-pressure column condenser 24 and the vapour fed through a valve 21 to the column 2, the unvaporized impurity-bearing liquid being exhausted through a valve 23.
