PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a mechanical separator and separation assembly for separating a fluid sample into first and second parts within a collection container.SOLUTION: A mechanical separator 10 has a body 11 having a through-hole for allowing fluid to pass therethrough, and includes a first portion 12, having a first density, and a second portion 14, having a second density different from the first density. The body defines a longitudinal axis extending perpendicularly to the through-hole, and exhibits a first compression value when a force is applied to the body parallel to the longitudinal axis. The body also defines an axis extending perpendicularly to the longitudinal axis and the through-hole and exhibits a second compression value when a force is applied parallel to the axis.
