PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an internal combustion engine capable of removing a particular substance accumulated above an upstream side end surface of an oxidation catalyst arranged in an exhaust passage and in the exhaust passage on its upstream side with respect to the upstream side end surface, and a particular substance removal method of the internal combustion engine.SOLUTION: Jetting means 40 jets a liquid oxidation catalyst 41 to the inside of an upstream small-diameter pipe 32 arranged on the upstream side of an oxidation catalyst 25; the liquid oxidation catalyst is supplied to a particular substance accumulated in the diameter enlargement pipe 33 arranged above an upstream side end surface 31 of the oxidation catalyst 25 and on its upstream side with respect to the upstream side end surface 31; and with catalyst action of the supplied liquid oxidation catalyst 41, the accumulated particular substance is oxidized and removed.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1
