摘要 An electrolysis system is provided for producing chlorine gas, the system comprising a cathode system; an anode for oxidizing hydrogen chloride gas to form chlorine gas, the anode comprising an electron conductor, a catalyst layer, and a hydrophobic layer; and a membrane adjacent to the anode and to the cathode, the hydrophobic layer being between the membrane and a catalyst layer. The cathode system comprises: (i) a cathode comprising an electron conductor; (ii) a cathode electrolyte comprising Fe(II) compounds and Fe(III) compounds in contact with the electron conductor; and (iii) a reactor comprising a reactor solution, the reactor solution comprising an oxidant in fluid contact with the cathode electrolyte and at least 1 M hydrochloric acid. The fluid contact of the reactor solution with the cathode electrolyte allows the cathode electrolyte rich in Fe(II) compounds to be transferred to the reactor and combined with the reactor solution and the reactor solution rich in Fe(III) compounds to be transferred from the reactor to the cathode electrolyte after the oxidant of the reactor solution reacts with the electrolyte rich in Fe(II) compounds to form the reactor solution rich in Fe(III) compound.
