PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a projector and a method for controlling the projector capable of preventing overheat of a dimmer and also performing efficient control.SOLUTION: A projector 11 for modulating light emitted from a lamp 2 and projecting the light includes: a display control part 103B for acquiring an image from an image source; a light modulation device 32 for modulating the light emitted from the lamp 2 on the basis of the acquired image; a dimmer 30 for reducing the amount of the light to be emitted from the lamp 2; and a dimming control part 103C for executing dimming control by the dimmer 30 on the basis of the acquired image. The dimming control part 103C stops execution of the dimming control when at least one of an operation state of the projector 11 and a state of the image acquired by the display control part 103B corresponds to a predetermined condition.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 2
