A method for predicting differential responses of humans to a biological or chemical substance comprising combining the substance with extra-embryonic stem cells from at least 10 genetically different human donors in vitro, assaying for an effect on the cells, analyzing the effect on cells from each donor identifying differences in effects on the extra-embryonic stem cells from the at least 10 genetically different donors, and comparing the differences across donors, wherein the comparison of the differences in effect from each donor predicts the differential responses that the substance will have on the humans.
