Provided is an air cleaner wherein the detection range for a sensor that detects people is increased and detection precision is improved. The air cleaner is configured such that: the air cleaner has a main body case (10), a fan (20) for air intake, an air cleaner filter (60), a people detecting device (55) for detecting positions of people, and a control means (30); the people detecting device (55) has a people detecting sensor (55b) held inside a case (55a) and a drive motor (55c) for changing the orientation of the people detecting sensor (55b); the drive motor (55c) rotates according to pulses input by the control means (30), with a rotating shaft (551c) connecting to the case (55a) so as to rotate the same, thereby changing the orientation of the people detecting sensor (55b); and the control means (30) inputs, when the rotation of the drive motor (55c) is reversed, a rotation pulse equivalent to the amount of the angle of rotation for movement after the rotation has been reversed, and a correction pulse.
