[Also in Group XXV] In a device for securing on coupling rods comprising a wedge member and a correspondingly tapered socket member, the wedge member being slideable within the socket member and actuated by the rod whereby a rod may be gripped and secured between the members by a pull on the rod the socket member consists of a sleeve and a secondary wedge member which fits within the sleeve. The secondary wedge member is preferably removably affixed to the sleeve. In the form shown for coupling a pair of rods, the socket member of similar taper to the wedge 2, Fig. 1, comprises the sleeve 9 and the secondary wedge member 10 formed with toes 11 to position it within the sleeve. The secondary wedge is also held by a nut and bolt 12 passing through holes therein and in the side walls of the sleeve the holes being oversize to permit adjustment. The edges of the wedge 2 and secondary wedge 10 receiving the rods may be flat grooved, or, as shown, V-grooved 3 as described in Specification 665,030, [Group XXIX]. Studs 6 are provided on one side of the wedge 2 co-operating with an indentation projecting internally on the sleeve to ensure correct entry of the wedge, the wedge being inserted clear of the indentation and then moved so that the studs are in alignment therewith and on opposite sides thereof, the secondary wedge 10 then being inserted in position. An exactly similar device. Fig. 2 may be used for gripping two parts of a single looped rod. A similar device may be used for capping or securing a single rod, the rod being inserted between the wedge and the secondary wedge. In another such construction the rod may be passed around the wedge 2, Fig. 5, the other features being as before. The secondary wedge 10 may be extended rearwardly and provided with an eye 8, or a hook or other fastening device, or the eye, &c., may be provided on the sleeve 9 or on both. The side walls of the sleeve in this embodiment are formed with opposing internal ribs 15, Fig. 6, spaced apart at a distance slightly less than the diameter of the rod and so located that the rod is forced between them as the wedge is drawn home, thus preventing retraction of the wedge or creeping when the load is off the rod. This effect may be increased by a bolt and nut 12, which may be the anchoring bolt and nut for the secondary wedge. |
