PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a method for operating a solid polymer fuel cell capable of detecting a decrease in a wet state of a cell and suppressing performance deterioration and degradation of the solid polymer fuel cell occurring in association with the decrease in the wet state without interrupting operation of the solid polymer fuel cell in progress or changing an operation state.SOLUTION: A method for operating a solid polymer fuel cell including a plurality of laminated cells C configured by sandwiching a solid polymer electrolyte membrane 2 between a fuel electrode 1 and an oxygen electrode 3 comprises the steps of: detecting an operation state of a solid polymer fuel cell FC during continuous power generation operation; determining whether the operation state detected by the operation state detection step (operation state from past to present during the continuous power generation operation) meets an insufficient wet condition caused by a low wet state of the cell C; and changing the operation state of the solid polymer fuel cell FC only during a prescribed period so that an amount of water included in the cell C increases when the determination step determines that the operation state detected by the operation state detection step meets the insufficient wet condition. |
