Class 71 A three stage gas evacuation system comprises at least two condenser chambers 15, 25 connected to the first stage 11 and to the second and third stages 21, 31 respectively, a single source of condensing liquid having an inlet 13 into the first chamber 15 and an outlet 38 from the last chamber, e.g., a third chamber 35, drain means 17 for said liquid passing directly from the first condenser to the second condenser chamber, and means, e.g., plates 14, 16 and overflow ports 23, 32 in each chamber for securing contact between said liquid and a gas passing through said chamber. In operation gas is evacuated from a vessel 10 by steam supplied to each of the three ejectors 11, 21, 31 arranged with their induced fluid passages in series; uncondensed gas being discharged through an outlet 37. The cooling liquid is transferred from the second chamber 25 to the third chamber 35 by a pump 28 and a duct 29.
