A means of implementing a write head device 206 for writer-to-disk contact detection and spacing sensing (flyheight determination) of recording heads in hard disk drives (HDDs). The device, which may be a spin-torque oscillator (STO), is provided between a main pole tip 204 and a magnetic shield 208 of the writer in the head and is electrically connected to the tip and shield. The device may comprise a material with a specific temperature coefficient of resistance allowing a predefined change in resistance to identify either a writer to disk contact or the spacing of the head from the disk. A microwave assisted magnetic recording (MAMR) head 202 may also be incorporated into the writer as may an embedded contact sensor (ECS) 220 and an acoustic emission sensor 224. |
