A system comprising an underwater reflector 10 comprising a water cored, normally, spherical shell 12; the shell has one or more primary hole(s) 19 in the lowest part of the shell, the total cross section area of the said hole(s) not exceeding 10% of the surface area of the shell, and a sonar emitting acoustic radiation towards the shell, the sonar system monitoring reflected signals from the shell and variations of the reflected signals from the norm are identified as indicating the possible presence of oil or gas in the water. The system may further comprise a system for the detection of oil and gas leaks underwater including the step of comparing the returned, or reflected, waveform with known returned waveforms from known materials to determine the make-up or composition of the leaking material. |
