摘要 A method for determining whether a sample of an unknown composition is a sample of a known composition to which a known amount of a SERS-active taggant compound (SATC) has been added involves adding a plurality of SERS particles to a sample of the unknown composition to form a mixture. Each SERS particle comprises a nanoparticle core having a plasmonic surface, a SERS-active internal standard compound (SAISC) adjacent said plasmonic surface and a shell. Alternatively the shell may comprise the SAISC. A SERS response spectrum from said mixture is obtained. The SERS response ratio SATC:SAISC from the SERS spectral response of the SATC and the SERS spectral response of the SAISC in the unknown composition is compared with the SERS response ratio SATC:SAISC from said known composition to determine whether the unknown composition is the same as the known composition. The SATC and the SAISC are selected so that the SERS response contains individual bands which are attributable to the SATC and SAISC upon excitation by the same wavelength.
