An apparatus 10 for determining a viewed status of a document by a user 12. A gaze detection means 20 determines a gaze direction of the user 12 by tracking their eye movement. A location of a portion of the document which is being displayed to the user 12 is determined. A processor 17 determines, from the gaze direction and location of a portion of the document, correlation data as to whether the determined gaze direction correlates with the displayed portion 22 of the document viewed by the user 12. It may then be determined whether or not a particular document has been viewed or read by a user. The processor may validate the identity of the user, as determined by a user identification means. This verifies that a document has indeed been viewed or read, and that it has been viewed or read by the correct individual. A system may utilise a plurality of apparatuses 10 to validate the viewed status of documents by different individual users. The document may be an electronic document and the apparatus may be a tablet computer. |
