摘要 A method comprising: mapping a stairstepped grid to a surface wherein both the zigzag portion of the grid and the surface represent a discontinuity in a geological environment; adjusting grid properties to compensate for spatial discrepancies between the grid and the surface based on the mapping; simulating flow in the geological environment using the grid with the adjusted properties. The grid may comprise nodes or vertices and cells whose connectivity across the boundary may be modified. The interface may be a fault, fracture or fissure. The surface may be discretised based on the transformation, eg. by triangulation based on positions of nodes projected on to the surface. Transmissibilities may be calculated based on the altered characteristics. The fault-line may extend across layers of a model with different rock compositions, eg. sand and shale layers. Spatial inconsistencies may be length mismatches between risers and treads of the stairstepped grid and distances along the surface. The simulation may use finite difference, finite element or finite volume techniques to model fluid dynamics or flow of oil, gas or other petroleum in sub-surface reservoirs. Changes to the mesh may improve accuracy of fault representation. Adjusted properties may include permeability, temperature, porosity and pressure.
