The present invention relates to a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating cancer, comprising a Carpinus pubescens extract as an active ingredient, and to a food composition for preventing or alleviating cancer. The composition comprising a Carpinus pubescens extract of the present invention does not exhibit the toxicity with respect to normal cells, and exhibits apoptosis effects of cancer cells by adjusting a cell period of the cancer cells and inducing apoptosis. Therefore, the composition comprising a Carpinus pubescens extract can be used as an anticancer composition, and can be used as a food composition or a pharmaceutical composition for preventing or treating cancer.
