Provided are an image processing method, an image processing device, and a program with which it is possible for erroneous detections to be suppressed, and for regions containing individual observation targets such as cell nuclei to be extracted accurately, even if there are irregularities in the staining of the observation targets, or if a plurality of stained observation targets are adjacent to one another. This image processing method is an image processing method for extracting, from a cell image acquired by capturing an image of a stained cell, a region containing a specific structure of the cell, characterized in that the image processing method comprises: an input step of inputting a search starting point into the cell image by means of a user operation; a creating step of creating a candidate region in which pixels satisfying certain conditions, around the search starting point, have been extracted; a computation step of computing a feature quantity of the candidate region; an assessment step of comparing the feature quantity of the candidate region with the feature quantity of the specific structure, to assess the degree of similarity between the candidate region and the specific structure; and an extracting step of extracting, as the region containing the specific structure in the cell image, the candidate region assessed as being similar to the specific structure. |
