PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide an image coding method and an image decoding method capable of obtaining a decoded image of higher quality with a smaller code amount, by improving the quality of a reference image.SOLUTION: Using a function identification technique, a predictive residual signal is reproduced with a function, and otherwise an input image is reproduced from its predictive signal with a function. The function information is coded. The function information is decoded and the predictive residual signal is generated from the function.
