The present invention relates to a method and an apparatus for optimally mapping a virtual antenna to a physical antenna. A transmitter generates a first precoding vector for a first one among a plurality of virtual antenna ports using a first sequence with a fixed size and a discrete Fourier transform (DFT) vector sequence with a fixed size in a time domain and a frequency domain. The transmitter generates a plurality of second precoding vectors for the remaining virtual antenna ports exclusive of the first one of the virtual antenna ports by circularly shifting the first precoding vector. Furthermore, the transmitter maps a plurality of first data streams for the virtual antenna ports to a plurality of physical antenna ports using the first precoding vector and the second precoding vectors.
