A transmitter for use in a communication system using a quadrature modulation scheme comprises: an orthogonal sequence unit 12 that specifies associations between information sequences and orthogonal sequences defined on the basis of the magnitudes of difference between information sequences of multiple information sequences different from each other and on the basis of probability of occurrence of determination errors between orthogonal sequences of multiple orthogonal sequences that are orthogonal to each other; and a symbol mapping unit 11 that generates, upon input of any one of the information sequences, modulated symbols based on an orthogonal sequence that is associated with the input information sequence according to the associations specified by the orthogonal sequence unit. |
