This disclosure relates to determining random number by directing a light source with a source frequency at a scattering material to generate multiple scattered photons having respective photon frequencies. A detector detects one of the multiple scattered photons at a detection frequency at which the photon frequency is substantially independent of thermal scattering by the scattering material and determines a random number based on the photon frequency of the detected photon. At this detection frequency scattering occurs, such as Raman scattering that is more unpredictable than thermal scattering. A single photon is sufficient to determine the random number and a high quality of randomness and high maximum rate is achieved. In particular, the randomness is better than pseudo-random generators and other physical random number generators. Further, lasers with relatively low output power and other standard components which are low- cost can be used. |
