Embodiments of the present invention relate to network management and discovery. In an embodiment, the present invention is a method of detecting and/or managing devices in a Device Level Ring (DLR) network. The method allows a user to obtain a visual representation of a logical ring of a DLR network, accurately and effectively illustrating the presence of physical links between network participants.

1. A method of detecting and/or managing devices in a Device Level Ring (DLR) network, the method comprising the steps of:
identifying a switching device connected to said DLR network that includes a port associated with multiple internet protocol (IP) addresses, each of said multiple IP addresses representing a device; sending a verification query to at least one of said multiple IP addresses to verify a presence of said DLR network and responsively receiving a first DLR object; extracting an IP address of an active ring supervisor from said first DLR object; sending a supervisor query to said IP address of said active ring supervisor and responsively receiving an active ring supervisor DLR object; reading a participant list and an order of DLR network participants from said active ring supervisor DLR object, said order representing a connection order in which said DLR network participants are connected to a first port of said active ring supervisor; and providing a visual representation of a logical ring of said DLR network.
