A primary cell comprises an electrode 3 of amalgamated aluminium in a solution 2 of the nitrate of an alkaline earth metal, for example barium nitrate or strontium nitrate or a mixture of the two nitrates. Sodium chloride and acetic acid may also be added to the electrolyte. The second electrode 5 may consist of antimony which may be mixed with lead. The aluminium electrode may be amalgamated by contact with a globule of mercury 8 in the electrolyte. The container 1 may be of insulating material or of metal and may constitute one of the electrodes. |
