680,031. Hinges. FAGERLI, B. M. March 6, 1950 [March 5, 1949; Sept. 13, 1949], No. 5587/50. Class 65 (ii) A friction hinge comprises a leaf 52 carrying a boss 31 having a conically tapered bore, the narrow end of which faces another leaf 51, a pivot in the form of a conical plug member 35 rotatably mounted in the bore, means on the narrow end of the pivot engaging the other leaf in such a manner as to prevent relative rotation, but to permit relative axial movement, between the pivot and the other leaf, and a screw threaded bolt 39 extending centrally into the pivot and through said means. As shown, the pivot has a non-circular extension 36 which engages a non-circular recess 37 in leaf 51, the bolt traverses a bore 38 in the pivot and has a threaded end 33 which can screw either into a screwed portion 38<SP>1</SP> of the bore 38 at the wider end of the pivot or into a screwed bore 32 in leaf 51. In a modification a projection on the other leaf engages a recess in the pivot and the bolt can either screw into the projection, or pass through the projection and the other leaf and have a separate nut screwed on to its projecting end. In a further modification a projection on the pivot engages a hole formed through the other leaf and the bolt screws into the pivot, the head of the bolt engaging the other leaf.
