684,377. Hot coating road-surface materials. RIEUX, C. G. H. Feb. 19, 1951. No. 4044/51. Class 107. [Also in Group XIII]. An apparatus for hot coating pulverulent materials with a binder, such as in the preparation of tar macadam, comprises a fixed section including binder tanks and a furnace, and a movable section revolving in the furnace, the apparatus being characterised by having means for selectively distributing the furnace heat between the material to be coated and the binder. An elevator 25 feeds materials into hopper 26 and thence into the rotating cylinders 7, 6, 5, a chamber 13 being provided adjacent to the inlet end into which a variable quantity of air from the furnace 1 may enter from ports 14, but which is not penetrable by the materials to be coated. Dust and vapour are removed by fan 28. The binder is melted in tanks (not shown) adjacent the furnace and receiving heat therefrom. The liquid binder is pumped by pump 16 through superheat tubes 17, which are enclosed within a boxlike structure, which may be placed into communication with the atmosphere through shutters 19, or in communication with a heated chamber by other shutters (not shown). The binder temperature is thereby controlled. The binder enters mixing chambers 23 by pipe 22 and meets the materials to be coated. Motor 31 supplies the necessary power and the supercharger 32 feeds air to the burner 15. The apparatus described above is suitable for crushed aggregates and a vane type mixing chamber for mixing sand and the like with binder is illustrated and described in the :Specification.
