Styrene, alone or in admixture with one or more natural or synthetic resins, e.g. alkyds, is polymerized, e.g. in bulk or organic solvent, in the presence of a catalyst containing the group <FORM:0684489/IV (a)/1> and in which the double bonds in the first two groups are not benzenoid, or the group <FORM:0684489/IV (a)/2> where R1 is a phenyl or alkyl substituted phenyl group and R2 is hydrogen or an alkyl or aryl group which may be substituted other than by the NO2, NH2 or OH group; or benzotriazole or alpha-phenyl indole. Specified catalysts are succinimide, phthalimide, pyrrole, melamine, barbituric acid, benzyl barbituric acid, o-sulphobenzimide, toluene sulphonamide, di-p-toluene-sulphonimide, N-p-toluenesulphonyl benzaldehyde hydrazone, 1-(p-toluenesulphonyl-amino)-4-benzene sulphonamide, N-p-toluenesulphonyl aniline, N-(p-ethoxyphenyl), or N-(p-carboxyphenyl), or N-(p-carbethoxyphenyl, or N-(p-bromophenyl) - p - toluene sulphonamide and veronal. Solvents mentioned are benzene, toluene and xylene. The alkyd resin may be made by reacting together dehydrated castor oil, rosin, phthalic anhydride and glycerol.
