A method of preparing a 2D material comprises: (i) selecting a fluid comprising the 2D material dispersed in a solvent; (ii) using a filtration device to remove solvent from the fluid and increase the concentration of 2D material in the fluid, wherein the filtration device comprises an inlet 56 for passage of fluid into the filtration device and an outlet 64 for passage of unfiltered fluid away from the filtration device, where a filtration surface is positioned between the inlet and outlet and the filtration device is arranged to direct fluid tangentially or parallel to the filtration surface. Preferably, the 2D material has fewer than 10 layers, and may be a dispersion of graphene, 2D boron nitride, molybdenum disulphide, niobium diselenide, tungsten disulphide, vanadium telluride, manganese oxide, or molybdenum trioxide. The method may include a prior step of selecting a 3D material, such as graphite, and exfoliating it to produce a 2D material. The fluid may include a surfactant, such as sodium cholate or sodium dodecylbenezenesulphonate, and the method may reduce the level of surfactant in the fluid. The filtration device may be a cross-flow filtration device. |
