The invention relates to cleaning compositions having anti-microbial benefits, in particular cleaning compositions having enhanced anti-microbial benefit because of the synergistic interaction between a surfactant and an iodine containing inorganic salt. Detergent compositions having a neutral to alkaline pH and that have low levels of halogens, halogen oxidants, or halogen salts providing good cleaning and improved anti-microbial benefits remain to be desired. It is an object of the present invention to provide a detergent composition with good cleaning and enhanced anti-microbial benefit and at neutral to alkaline pH and having low levels of halogens, halogen oxidants or halogen salts. It has been found that at a neutral to alkaline pH, a synergistic anti-microbial activity may be obtained between a surfactant selected from sulphonated or carboxylated anionic, cationic or non-ionic surfactants and an iodine containing inorganic salt selected from iodate or iodide salts in a concentration of less than 0.5%w.
