[Also in Group XL (c)] A crystal contact device comprises a semi-conductor with a tapered portion which is in point contact with the straight edge of one or more metallic. contact members, and is such that the point of contact and the contact pressure are adjustable over predetermined ranges, at least during the assembly process. In the Figure, a semiconductor element 10 of oblique conical shape is fixed to a metal rod 11 which is movable in a tube 2 which is fixed in an insulator block 1. The contact members 7 and 8, consisting of thin flexible metal plates soldered to metal rods 3 and 4, may be manufactured by cutting away the central portion of a single metal plate of phosphor bronze or beryllium copper after it has been fixed in position. The point of contact and the contact pressure may be adjusted by axial movement and rotation of the rod 11 during assembly, after which the rod 11 may be soldered to the tube 2. The device may be enclosed in a housing 13, and the rods 4, 11 and 3 serve as connections to the electrodes for use in amplifying or generating circuits. In place of using a semi-conductor of oblique conical shape, a right circular cone may be provided, the rod 11 then being bent so that its upper portion is parallel to, but not in line with, the axis of rotation. The contact members may be of different metals, and assembled separately with the aid of projected shadows from a beam of light through tube 2. |
