The present invention provides advantageous methods and systems for registering and authenticating a user of an online service using pattern authentication secrets, typically a memorable identification pattern within a matrix of elements. The methods and systems are beneficial over similar methods and systems according to the prior art in that they utilize a pre-defined user key in order to improve security and in order to improve the speed by which a user can be authenticated. The pre defined user key may comprise an indication of the location of elements within the matrix. In particular, the method differs from the prior art in that when a user registers with an online service and generates their pattern authentication secret a pre-defined user key is also generated. Subsequently, when the user wishes to be authenticated that pre-defined user key is utilised to decipher the users pattern authentication secret. |
