An aerator hole spacing control with lockout prevents operation of a coring head (114) except if the speed control is at a limited range of preset coring speed positions between the minimum and the maximum. Electrical signals corresponding to a coring speed may be provided to a controller (120) that allows the coring head to be lowered to an operating position only if the signals are within the limited range of preset coring speed positions.
