An apparatus for synthesizing at least one nitroalkane, the apparatus comprising: a reactor for reacting a hydrocarbon feedstock with aqueous nitric acid to produce a reaction product stream; a cooling system for quenching the reaction product stream such that it phase separates into at least a gas phase, an oil phase, and an aqueous phase, wherein the cooling system is connected to the reactor by a reaction product stream line; a divider connected to the cooling system by an aqueous phase line for dividing the aqueous phase into a first aqueous stream carried by a first aqueous stream line and a second aqueous stream carried by a second aqueous stream line; a recycling system for returning the first aqueous stream from the first aqueous stream line to the reactor; and a recovery system for recovering the at least one nitroalkane from at least one of the oil phase and the second aqueous stream, wherein the recovery system is connected to an oil phase line from the cooling system and is connected to the second aqueous stream line from the divider.
