Condensation products, capable of dilution with butanol and aromatic hydrocarbons, are prepared by condensing melamine and formaldehyde under alkaline conditions and completing the condensation under acid conditions in the presence of a nitroparaffin containing 1-4 carbon atoms, or a condensate thereof with formaldehyde, and an aliphatic alcohol containing 3-5 carbon atoms; there being employed per mol. of melamine, 6.0-6.5 mols. of formaldehyde, 0.1-0.5 mols. of nitroparaffin, and at least 6 mols. of alcohol. In a modification, formaldehyde is partially condensed under alkaline conditions with the nitroparaffin and melamine in the first stage. In examples: (1) 2-nitropropane was heated with formalin at pH 8-9, melamine added, the mixture boiled, acidified with phosphoric acid and butanol added. The mixture was heated under reflux, the water distilled off being removed whilst the butanol was returned to the reaction vessel. The mixture was then distilled under reduced pressure, more butanol being added as required, until no more water passed over with the distillate. (2) To a melamine-formalin condensate was added 2-nitropropane, butanol and phosphoric acid and the mixture reacted as in (1). (3) To a melamine-formalin condensate was added a 2-nitropropane-formalin condensate, butanol and phosphoric acid. Thereafter as in (1). (4) A mixture of formalin, nitroethane and melamine was boiled, and phosphoric acid and butanol added. Thereafter as in (1). (5) A mixture of formalin, 2-nitropropane and melamine was heated, and phosphoric acid and amyl alcohol added Thereafter as in (1).
