PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a retardation film that can be made thin, has a large retardation in a plane direction and a small retardation in a thickness direction, has a wide control range of optical characteristics such as development of retardation and wavelength dispersion, and can be produced by an easy method, and a production method of the retardation film, a polarizing plate and an image display device including the retardation film.SOLUTION: The retardation film comprises a resin having a negative intrinsic birefringence and a planar structure, in which a thickness Z of the planar structure, a major axis Y and a minor axis Z on a plane of the structure satisfy Y/Z>45, Y≥X>Z, 10 nm<Y<500 nm, Z<10 nm and 0.1<X/Y≤1. An in-plane retardation Re, a retardation Rth in a thickness direction, and Nz defined by Nz=(|Re|/Rth)+0.5 satisfy 0.2<Nz<0.8 and 50 nm<Re<400 nm.SELECTED DRAWING: None |
