Provided are a depth map contour line generating method and a system thereof. The depth map contour line generating method according to an embodiment of the present invention quantizes depth values of a depth map into multiple quantization steps, and generates contour lines in the quantized depth map. Therefore, in the process of converting 2D image content into 3D image content, depth map contour lines can be automatically generated, and thus, it is unnecessary to manually draw a curve at the edges of a depth map in a graphic tool. Therefore, the number of required staff members can be reduced and the work speed can be remarkably enhanced.
