Disclosed is a light emitting diode having electrode pads. The light emitting diode includes a substrate, a first conductive type semiconductor layer arranged on the substrate; a mesa which is located on the first conductive type semiconductor layer and includes a second conductive type semiconductor layer and an active layer interposed between the first conductive type semiconductor layer and the second conductive type semiconductor layer; a transparent electrode layer arranged on the second conductive type semiconductor layer to come into contact with the second conductive type semiconductor layer; a first electrode pad electrically connected to the first conductive type semiconductor layer; an insulating layer having at least one opening arranged on the transparent electrode layer while covering top and side surfaces of the transparent electrode layer and the mesa; a second electrode pad arranged on the insulating layer; an upper extension part in contact with the transparent electrode layer on the transparent electrode layer; and a connection part connecting the second electrode pad to the upper extension part. According to the present invention, the second electrode pad is disposed on the insulating layer to be insulated from the second conductive type semiconductor layer, so that current is prevented from crowding near the second electrode pad.
