Disclosed are an air cleaner and a method for operating the air cleaner. The air cleaner may be configured to comprise: a dust sensor which is provided on a rear surface of the air cleaner and measures the amount of dust in the air; a distance sensor which is provided on the rear surface of the air cleaner and measures a distance between the rear surface of the air cleaner and a wall; and a control unit which determines whether the distance measured by the distance sensor satisfies a preset air cleaner installation condition, and, when the distance does not satisfy the air cleaner installation condition, compensates for the degree of contamination attributable to the amount of dust measured by the dust sensor. |
