PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide surgical stapling instruments used in anastomosis or dissection of tissue and configured to effectuate an appropriate balance between the anastomotic strength and the degree of hemostasis.SOLUTION: A staple cartridge 118 for a surgical stapling apparatus 100 comprises: a body portion having first and second walls; and a tissue contacting surface 121 having a horizontal plane. The horizontal plane extends through the tissue contacting surface, and is substantially transverse to a vertical axis extending through the body portion. Here, a point on the tissue contacting surface and a point on the horizontal plane define a gap therebetween, the gap varying as the point defining the dimension of the gap is moved transversely with respect to the vertical axis.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1 |
