A photoelectric conversion element which comprises a first electrode that has a photosensitive layer containing a light absorbent on a conductive supporting body and a second electrode that faces the first electrode, and wherein the light absorbent is formed of an ammonium salt represented by formula (1) or formula (2) and a metal salt represented by formula (3); and a solar cell which uses this photoelectric conversion element. In formula (1) and formula (2), each of R11, R12 and R21 independently represents a hydrogen atom or an aliphatic hydrocarbon group having 1-12 carbon atoms; Q11 represents an atomic group that combines with a nitrogen atom and forms a nitrogen-containing aliphatic ring; Q21 represents an atomic group that combines with a -N+(R21)=C- group and forms a nitrogen-containing heterocyclic ring other than an imidazole ring; and each of X11 and X21 independently represents an anion.
