A personal flotation device (10), comprising: a chest portion (20) having a top region (22) and a bottom region (24); an abdominal portion (50); and a connecting portion (60) positioned between the bottom region (24) of the chest portion (20) and the abdominal portion (50) and extending only from a center region of the chest portion, wherein the width (Wcc,) of the connecting portion is smaller than the width of both the chest portion (Wehest) and the abdominal portion (Wab), wherein the connecting portion (60) is configured in a manner to extend along a wearer's sternum such that the connecting portion does not extend substantially along a wearer's ribs, and the ratio of the width of the connecting portion (Wcc,) to the width of the chest portion (Wehest) is at least approximately 1 :3; and wherein the chest portion (20), the abdominal portion (50) and the connecting portion (60) are each configured to be buoyant. |
