A calculation device receives pricing and payment information for a transaction, such as a credit or debit card transaction, and calculates a surcharge or payment type fee based upon the transaction costs that will apply if the transaction is completed. 1. A communication system for applying a surcharge to a transaction between a merchant and a customer, comprising:
a webserver having a webpage, the webpage receiving surcharge configuration information from the merchant, the surcharge configuration information including a surcharge threshold; a merchant device associated with the merchant and receiving from the customer a selection of a payment form from a plurality of payment forms, each of the plurality of payment forms associated with a BIN number; a calculation device receiving a price for the transaction and the selected payment form from the merchant device, the calculation device calculating a calculated cost of acceptance for the transaction using the BIN number for the selected payment form and the price for the transaction, the calculated cost of acceptance an estimate of the actual cost of acceptance upon completion of the transaction; wherein a surcharge is applied to the calculated cost of acceptance based on the calculated cost of acceptance and the surcharge configuration information; and the calculated cost of acceptance with the surcharge is displayed so that the customer may approve and complete the transaction or select another payment form.
