Artificial fibres or threads of cellulose, fibroin, casein and the like are prepared by spinning into a precipitating medium moving in concurrent flow therewith and at a progressively increasing velocity, the concentration of the precipitating medium being also increased progressively as the coagulation proceeds, whereby the fibres are drawn out and stretched by the movement of the precipitating medium. In an example, viscose is spun into a spinning funnel into which is led water at the top, 5 per cent solution of sodium chloride at a lower level, and 10 per cent solution of sodium chloride at a still lower level. In a second example, four funnels are used, the first being supplied with water, the second with 2 per cent ammonium chloride solution, the third with 5 per cent ammonium chloride solution, and the fourth with 10 per cent ammonium chloride solution. In a further example, the liquids used are water, 2 per cent ammonium chloride, 5 per cent ammonium chloride, 10 per cent ammonium chloride, and a 3-5 per cent sulphuric acid solution, respectively. |
