PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To properly control exhaust and mechanical adaptability in a compression ignition engine.SOLUTION: A method of operating a compression ignition engine includes a step for forming a combustible mixture by substantially uniformly mixing a first fuel and air, and introducing the mixture to at least one cylinder, a step for compressing the combustible mixture by a piston in a compression stroke, a step for injecting a second fuel easier in automatic ignition in comparison with the first fuel, to the combustible mixture in injecting the second fuel before the start of combustion in the compression stroke, and a step for continuing the compression stroke until the combustion is started at a position in at least one cylinder where concentration of the second fuel becomes highest and/or a temperature of the mixture becomes highest. A discharged matter and/or mechanical stress are respectively lowered to be less than prescribed threshold values by changing an amount and/or timing of the injected second fuel, and/or a temperature of cylinder supply air, individually to at least one cylinder.SELECTED DRAWING: Figure 1a |
