At startup in an unlocked state (at subsequent startup when an engine (11) was stopped in an unlocked state in which the VCT phase is not locked in an intermediate lock phase), a determination is made as to the possibility of engine startup by a maximum delay angle startup process. In the event of a determination that engine startup by a maximum delay angle startup process is possible, a maximum delay angle startup process is carried out. In this maximum delay angle startup process, the engine 11 is cranked in a high-rotation zone at or above a prescribed rotation speed, and with the VCT phase controlled so as to closely approximate the maximum delay angle phase (the maximum delay angle phase, or within a prescribed range from the maximum delay angle phase), fuel injection and ignition are initiated, and the engine (11) is started up. In so doing, the engine (11) can be started up quickly without locking the VCT phase, during startup in the unlocked state. |
