PROBLEM TO BE SOLVED: To provide a production method capable of synthesizing an alkylcarbonyl lactone compound in a high yield.SOLUTION: There is provided a method for producing an alkylcarbonyl lactone compound by intramolecular-reacting an alkylcarbonyl carboxylic acid compound represented by the formula (1) using a peroxide and an iodide salt which is a catalyst precursor and adding a peroxide at a rate so that the molar ratio of the excessive peroxide to the alkylcarbonyl carboxylic acid compound in the reaction system is 1.5 or less.
