An electrochemical method for detecting a substance, the method comprising: providing an electrode having immobilised thereon a substantially water-insoluble compound comprising at least one optionally substituted quinone or hydroquinone group per molecule; contacting the electrode with a sample; carrying out an electrochemical test, which, if the substance is present in the sample, involves a reaction between the substantially water-insoluble compound and the substance, to obtain electrochemical information; using the electrochemical information to determine the presence of and/or the concentration of the substance in the sample.
